Fatal Crash on the Fairfax County Parkway

West Springfield Police District – On Wednesday, January 15 shortly after 8 a.m., police were called to the area of the Fairfax County Parkway and New Road for the report of a crash.

During the initial investigation, detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit determined that a 2005 Chevrolet Astro van, driven by a 32-year-old Maryland man was northbound on the Parkway in the left lane approaching the intersection of New Road. A 2001 Toyota Camry, driven by 40-year-old Vijaya L. Vellanki of Ashburn, was at the intersection of the Parkway and New Road, facing east. As the van approached, the Camry reportedly pulled out in front of the van in an apparent attempt to go north on the Fairfax County Parkway; the vehicles collided.

The driver of the van sustained minor injuries and declined to be transported. Vellanki was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. She succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead on Thursday, January 16.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to be factors in this crash.
