Driver Arrested in May 24 Fatal Crash

Mason Police District – On Dec. 19, detectives from our Fugitive Track and Apprehension Squad with the assistance of the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tewodros Worku, 35, of Maryland. Worku was the driver of the 2018 Honda Accord involved in a fatal crash on May 24.

Worku originally ran from the scene of the crash. When found by our K-9 unit, he claimed to be a passenger. Detectives determined Worku was the driver of the Honda. On Nov. 23, detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit obtained warrants for Worku for DUI manslaughter and felony hit and run.  

Worku will be extradited back to Fairfax County, where warrants will be served and a date for trial will be set.

Mason Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate the early morning fatal crash that occurred in Falls Church. Officers responded at 2:16 a.m. to the 3700 block of S. George Mason Drive. Preliminarily, detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit determined the driver of a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta was travelling southbound on S. George Mason Drive attempting to turn left into Skyline Plaza. The driver of a 2018 Honda Accord was travelling northbound on S. George Mason Drive and struck the Jetta on the passenger side. Initially, both occupants of the Accord ran from the scene, but were found by our K9 officers. One of the men from the Accord was arrested for drunk in public. The other man was taken to the hospital for injuries considered life threatening. Detectives continue to investigate to determine which occupant was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The passenger in the VW Jetta, Gladis Suyapa Deras, 54, of Falls Church, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, an adult male, was taken to the hospital for injuries not considered life threatening.

Details of the investigation will be presented to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for additional charges. Preliminarily, alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash.

Victim advocates from our Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to this case to ensure the victim’s family is receiving appropriate resources and assistance.
