Man in Custody After an Attempted Sexual Assault

Mason Police District – Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau have arrested a man after an attempted sexual assault in Bailey’s Crossroads.

On August 3, at 5:00 a.m., officers responded to the 3500 block of Carlin Springs Road in Bailey’s Crossroads for a sexual assault. An unknown suspect assaulted and attempted to sexually assault a victim outside. The victim was able to fight the suspect off and call the police. The suspect fled the area before police arrival. The victim sustained minor physical injuries during the assault.

Detectives identified the suspect as John Artis, 22, of Chesterfield, Virginia. Yesterday, with the assistance of the Chesterfield County Police Department, Artis was arrested and charged with Assault and Attempted Sexual Assault. Artis is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail and will later be extradited to Fairfax County.
