FCPD’s LPR Technology Leads to the Recovery of 500 Stolen Vehicles
Fairfax County, VA— The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) continues to demonstrate how technology-driven policing is enhancing public safety across our community. Through the strategic use of License Plate Reader (LPR) technology, officers and analysts have successfully recovered more than 500 stolen vehicles since November 2022, returning property to victims while disrupting criminal activity throughout the region.
LPR technology allows officers to quickly identify stolen vehicles by capturing license plate information and comparing it against law enforcement databases in real time. When a stolen vehicle is detected, officers receive immediate alerts, enabling a quick and informed response. Integrated with patrol operations and supported by the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), this technology serves as a force multiplier, helping officers locate vehicles faster, identify suspects, and generate critical investigative leads that may not otherwise be available.
The recovery of more than 500 stolen vehicles represents more than just a number. Each recovery is a direct impact on a victim who has had their property returned, often during what can be a stressful and disruptive experience. Additionally, stolen vehicles are frequently linked to other criminal activity, including burglaries and robberies. By locating and recovering these vehicles quickly, FCPD is not only solving individual cases but also preventing further crimes and enhancing overall community safety.

FCPD remains committed to the responsible and transparent use of LPR technology. These systems are used strictly for legitimate law enforcement purposes, including criminal investigations and missing person cases, and are supported by strong public-facing policies, regular audits, and oversight to ensure compliance with Virginia law. This balanced approach ensures that while FCPD leverages cutting-edge technology, it also maintains the trust and confidence of the community it serves.
This milestone reflects the department’s commitment to using innovative technology to deliver real, measurable results for the residents of Fairfax County.
