Detectives Investigate Fatal Crash Involving E-Scooter in Merrifield

McLean Police District— Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal crash involving a vehicle and an electric scooter in Merrifield.

On April 1, at 11:22 p.m., officers responded to a crash involving a man operating an e-scooter at Gallows Road and Gatehouse Road in Merrifield.

Officers determined that the driver of a 2022 Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on Gallows Road prior to Gatehouse Road. Mesfin Abay, 37, of Falls Church, was operating an e-scooter, from west to east across Gallows Road at Gatehouse Road, when he was struck by the vehicle. Abay was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota was uninjured and remained on scene.

On April 30, detectives were notified by the Medical Examiner’s Office that Abay succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash.
