Detectives Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Merrifield
McLean Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Thursday evening in Merrifield.
On June 18 at approximately 8:53 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Gallows Road and Strawberry Lane for a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle.
Preliminarily, CRU detectives determined Jose Sorto Medrano, 68, of Annandale, was crossing Gallows Road outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by a 2022 BMW X5 traveling southbound. The driver remained on scene.
Sorto Medrano was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
Preliminarily, speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver. Alcohol is believed to be a factor for the pedestrian.
Victim specialists from our Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure that the victim’s family is receiving appropriate resources and assistance.
