Fairfax County, VA – With summer traffic in full swing and more motorcycles sharing the road, the Fairfax County Police Department wants to remind everyone that road safety is a responsibility shared by all of us.

Preventing motorcycle crashes is not just up to riders, and it is not just up to drivers. It takes both, working together.

Riders, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians all share the job of staying alert, obeying traffic laws, and choosing safety over shortcuts every time they’re on the road.

Why It Matters

Riders do not have the protection that comes with being inside a vehicle, so a single distraction can change a life in an instant. While many motorcyclists ride responsibly, our officers continue to encounter dangerous and reckless riding behaviors that put everyone on the road at risk. Proactive enforcement is one way we work to improve roadway safety and prevent serious crashes.

Below are two recent examples of motorcycle enforcement stops conducted by FCPD officers during targeted enforcement efforts.

For Motorcyclists:

  • Gear Up Properly: A helmet and real protective gear (i.e., a sturdy jacket, gloves, long pants, boots) should be part of every ride. Bright or reflective materials make you easier to spot.
  • Check Your Bike: Take a few minutes before you ride to make sure everything checks out (i.e., tires, brakes, lights, fluids, etc.).
  • Ride Smart: Stay aware of what’s around you, anticipate trouble before it happens, signal your moves, steer clear of blind spots, and leave room between you and other vehicles.
  • Stay Sober, Stay Alert: No distractions and no impairment.

For Drivers:

  • Double-Check Before You Move: Motorcycles are easy to miss. Take a second look in mirrors and blind spots before turning, merging, or switching lanes.
  • Leave Room and Use Turn Signals: Don’t tailgate or crowd a motorcycle, give riders the space and advanced notice they need.
  • Use Turn Signals: A little advance notice gives riders time to adjust.
  • Treat Them as Equals on the Road: Motorcycles have the same rights, and the same responsibilities, as any other vehicle.
  • Stay Sober, Stay Alert: No distractions and no impairment.
