West Springfield Police District – Detectives from our Criminal Investigations Division have charged a man after he recklessly discharged a firearm.

On August 5, at 5:43 p.m., officers responded to the 5000 block of Hall Street in West Springfield for the report of a shooting. Witnesses told officers they observed a group of men in the neighborhood and one of them discharged a handgun into the ground near several homes. The men left the area in separate vehicles prior to police arrival. No injuries were reported.

Officers quickly located the involved vehicles a short distance away and detained the men in the 8600 block of Reseca Lane. During a search of the area, officers recovered the handgun.

Detectives responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Through their investigation, detectives determined that Amen Giorgis, 18, of Lorton, discharged the firearm.

Giorgis was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and was charged with Reckless Handling of a Firearm. He was later released on an unsecured $1,000 bond.
