West Springfield Police District – Detectives from our Criminal Investigations Division (CID), working alongside the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department’s Office of the Fire Marshal and the United States Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have charged six suspects in connection with a fire at a training facility in Lorton.
On June 27, at 5:20 p.m., Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the 9000 block of Furnace Road in Lorton for a reported fire at a storage facility containing heavy equipment. Crews arrived and found the facility fully engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported. The fire caused an estimated $1 million to $1.3 million in damage.
Our Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) reviewed surveillance footage from the property and observed several individuals entering the facility before the fire and leaving the area after it began.
As the investigation continued, video of the incident was released to the public, generating several tips through Crime Solvers of Fairfax County. Information provided by the community, along with Flock license plate reader technology, helped detectives identify a vehicle connected to the case and develop additional leads.
Working closely with the Office of the Fire Marshal and ATF, detectives followed those leads and reviewed additional digital evidence, resulting in the identification of six suspects. In the early morning hours of September 3, detectives, along with several FCPD specialty units, the Fire Marshal’s Office, and ATF, executed simultaneous search and arrest warrants at three residences.
Ricky Torres, 26, of Fairfax, was arrested and charged with burglary and trespassing. He was held on a $1,000 secured bond, which he later posted.
Brice Bartley, 18, of Fairfax, was arrested and charged with burglary and trespassing. He is being held without bond.
Aidan Smith, 18, of Clifton, was arrested and charged with burglary and trespassing. He was held on a $1,000 secured bond, which he later posted.
Additionally, three 17-year-old juveniles were each charged with burglary and trespassing.
Additional charges are anticipated.
