Fairfax County, VA – Whether you are behind the handlebars or behind the wheel, paying attention, following traffic laws, and looking out for one another can help prevent serious crashes. The Fairfax County Police Department is reminding drivers and motorcyclists that motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility.
For Motorcyclists
Gear up every time. Wear a properly fitted helmet and protective clothing, including gloves, sturdy footwear, and a jacket and pants designed for riding. Bright or reflective gear can also help you be seen.
Ride within your abilities. Speed, road conditions, traffic, and visibility can change quickly. Give yourself enough time and space to react to unexpected hazards.
Make yourself visible. Use your headlights, signal before turning or changing lanes, and avoid lingering in another vehicle’s blind spot.
Inspect your motorcycle. Before hitting the road, check your tires, brakes, lights, signals, and mirrors.
For Drivers
Look twice for motorcycles. Motorcycles have a smaller profile and can be more difficult to see, particularly at intersections and when changing lanes.
Check your blind spots. Mirrors alone do not show everything. Before changing lanes or turning, check carefully for motorcycles, bicycles, and other roadway users.
Give riders space. Maintain a safe following distance and never crowd a motorcycle. Riders may need additional room to respond to potholes, debris, wet pavement, or other hazards.
Use your turn signals. Communicate your intentions early and give other roadway users time to react.
