Fairfax County, VA – The first week of our “Operation Safe Right Turn” traffic initiative concluded with an impressive 1,000+ citations and warnings issued. Officers conducted targeted enforcement for traffic violations focused on pedestrian safety after multiple incidents occurred throughout Fairfax County.
This coordinated effort resulted in 1,151 citations and warnings being issued. Additionally, officers distributed approximately 5,600 flyers to community members that highlighted pedestrian safety. As a result of this successful effort to spread awareness, “Operation Safe Right Turn” is expected to continue for several weeks.
Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are encouraged to remain attentive to reduce the possibility of crashes.
Drivers can help by remembering:
- Look before you turn. Check the entire crosswalk, mirrors, and blind spots before moving.
- Yield to pedestrians. If someone is within the crosswalk, give them the time and space necessary to cross safely.
- Expect bicyclists and scooters. They can approach an intersection more quickly than a pedestrian and may be difficult to see without an intentional check.
- Give driving your full time and attention. A momentary lapse in attention at an intersection can have serious consequences
