Franconia District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run crash that occurred Sunday night in Springfield.
On October 4 at 8:20 p.m., officers responded to Old Keene Mill Road and Backlick Road for reports of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle.
Preliminarily, CRU detectives determined Thomas Gum, 44, of no fixed address, was walking from north to south across Old Keene Mill Road toward Backlick Road, mid-block and not in a crosswalk, when a white SUV traveling eastbound on Old Keene Mill Road in the right travel lane struck him. The driver of the SUV fled the scene without stopping.
Gum was transported to a local hospital by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department personnel, where he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the crash continues as detectives work to identify the driver of the vehicle. Speed and alcohol are under investigation.
Victim Services Specialists from our Major Crimes Bureau have been assigned to ensure the victim’s family is receiving appropriate resources and assistance.
