Fairfax County, VA – When someone goes missing, every second counts. Our Search and Rescue (SAR) Team uses specialized training, technology, and investigative techniques to help locate missing people and assist criminal investigations.

Available 24/7, SAR assists patrol officers and detectives working critical missing-person cases involving vulnerable adults, children, and individuals facing life-threatening circumstances. The team consists of 50 members who serve in SAR in addition to their primary assignments within the department.

The Science Behind the Search

Finding a missing person requires more than searching an area. SAR members are trained in land navigation, human tracking, and specialized search methods. The team uses Lost Person Behavior, a research-based approach drawing data from more than 150,000 missing-person cases to help determine where someone may have traveled based on their last known location, behavior, and surrounding terrain.

Depending on the incident, SAR can provide search planning guidance, deploy specialized personnel, or activate the full team. Resources such as drones, thermal imaging, and specialized K9 units can also assist with search operations.

In 2025, SAR handled 50 related events, including consultations and field responses. The team also supports evidence searches related to criminal investigations.

Training and Regional Partnerships

On October 5 and 6, SAR hosted a regional two-day Search and Rescue Basic School at Mason Neck State Park.

The school provided an opportunity for regional departments to train together and strengthen coordination during searches that may require resources from multiple jurisdictions.

Community members also play an important role in search efforts. When reporting a missing person, providing accurate details about their last known location, clothing, medical needs, and other relevant circumstances can help officers focus their search.

Whether locating missing people or recovering evidence, FCPD’s SAR Team remains prepared to support critical operations throughout Fairfax County and the region.
