FCPD Launches First Traffic Safety Initiative of 2026
Fairfax County, VA – As we begin 2026, the Fairfax County Police Department is launching its first traffic safety initiative of the year with a renewed focus on enforcement, education, and community awareness. Our yearlong mission is clear: to reduce fatal, serious injury, and property damage crashes while improving the overall quality of life in Fairfax County.
Traffic safety remains one of our top public safety priorities. Preventing crashes saves lives, protects families, and keeps our roadways safer for everyone who lives, works, and travels through our community.

A Balanced Approach, Education and Enforcement
Traffic enforcement and education are essential components of effective law enforcement. While enforcement holds drivers accountable for unsafe behavior, education helps prevent dangerous choices before they lead to serious consequences.
Throughout 2026, our officers will continue using a balanced approach that includes visible traffic enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and community engagement. This combination allows us to address risky behavior while also empowering residents with the knowledge needed to make safer decisions behind the wheel.
New Year’s Targeted Impaired Driving Enforcement
January begins with targeted impaired driving enforcement following the New Year holiday period. While celebrations may continue into the early weeks of the year, impaired driving remains a serious concern that places everyone on the road at risk.
Officers will be focused on identifying and stopping impaired drivers, removing dangerous behavior from our roadways, and reinforcing the message that driving under the influence is never acceptable. These efforts are designed not only to deter impaired driving but also to prevent tragic outcomes before they occur.
National Passenger Safety Week: January 19–26
January 19 through January 26 marks National Passenger Safety Week, an important opportunity to highlight the role passengers and peers play in keeping roads safe.
This initiative promotes safe driving by encouraging passengers to speak up when they observe reckless or dangerous behavior. Whether it is excessive speed, distracted driving, or impairment, passengers have the power to influence decisions that can prevent crashes.
Parents are encouraged to talk with their children and teens about the importance of speaking up. A simple reminder or refusal to ride with an unsafe driver can make a life-saving difference.
Key safety reminders for all road users include:
- Always buckle up
- Put the phone down and avoid distractions
- Never drive impaired
- Speak up if you feel unsafe as a passenger
Working Together for Safer Roads
Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. Law enforcement plays a critical role through enforcement and education, but lasting change happens when the community is engaged and informed.
As we move through 2026, the Fairfax County Police Department remains committed to proactive traffic safety initiatives that protect lives and strengthen our community. By working together, we can reduce crashes, prevent injuries, and ensure our roadways are safer for everyone.
