Motorcycle Season Is Here: What Riders and Drivers Need to Know
Fairfax County, VA – As summer approaches and warmer weather brings more motorcycles onto our roads, the Fairfax County Police Department is reminding all road users to do their part to reduce crashes and keep everyone safe.
Motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility. Riders and drivers both play a role in preventing serious crashes, especially as traffic increases during the summer months.

Why It Matters
Motorcycle crashes can have serious and life-changing consequences. Riders are more exposed than drivers in passenger vehicles, which means even a single unsafe decision, whether it is speeding, distraction, impairment, or failing to check a blind spot, can lead to tragedy.
Reducing crashes takes all of us. Motorcyclists, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians each have a responsibility to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and make safe choices every time they use the road.
For Motorcyclists:
- Wear the Right Gear: Always wear a helmet and protective clothing, including a durable jacket, gloves, pants, and boots. Bright or reflective gear can help increase visibility.
- Check Your Bike: Before each ride, inspect your tires, brakes, lights, signals, and fluid levels to make sure your motorcycle is ready for the road.
- Ride Smart: Stay alert, anticipate hazards, use turn signals, avoid blind spots, and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Stay Sober: Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impairment slows reaction time and affects judgment.
- Stay Focused: Keep your attention on the road. Distractions can be deadly, especially on two wheels.
For Drivers:
- Look Twice: Motorcycles are smaller and can be harder to see. Check mirrors and blind spots before turning, merging, or changing lanes.
- Give Riders Space: Maintain a safe following distance and avoid crowding motorcycles.
- Use Turn Signals: Signal early so riders have time to react.
- Respect Their Place on the Road: Motorcycles have the same rights and responsibilities as any other vehicle.
- Drive Sober and Stay Focused: Avoid distractions and never drive impaired.
Whether you are behind the wheel or on two wheels, every safe decision matters. Slow down, stay alert, and help us make Fairfax County roads safer this summer.
