Fatal Crash in the Fort Belvoir Area

Mount Vernon Police District – Around 6:12 a.m., on Friday, November 22, a driver of a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt was attempting to make a left turn from northbound Richmond Highway into 9114 Richmond Highway. The Cobalt was struck by a 2003 BMW, driven by a 45-year-old man, which was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway. Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Cobalt, 69-year-old Alex Kovacs of The Plains, Virginia, may not have been wearing a seat belt and was ejected from his vehicle.  Mr. Kovacs was transported to a local hospital, where he died on December 6.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation though it does not appear that alcohol is a factor.
