Franconia Police District – Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond F. Morrogh has informed Colonel Edwin C. Roessler Jr., Chief of the Fairfax County Police Department, that he finds no basis for criminal liability on the part of the officers who discharged their weapons in this case. Investigation revealed officers encountered a man who raised his firearm which caused two officers to discharge their weapons.

Sgt. Joseph Furman, a 24-year veteran who is assigned to the Operational Support Bureau and PFC Gene Taitano, a 15-year veteran who is assigned to the Franconia District Police Station, have both returned to full duty status after having been assigned administrative duties since the incident. The Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct an administrative investigation in accordance with our General Orders.

The subject has been subsequently released from the hospital.

Previous Release September 8, 2014: Officer-Involved Shooting in the Springfield Area

Franconia Police District – Police were dispatched to the 7000 block of Old Keene Mill Road for a report of an armed suicidal man in his 60’s. Upon arrival on the scene, officers contained the area and coordinated a lock down of Garfield Elementary School, in addition to evacuating the location, which was the Springfield United Methodist Church.

After officers contained the scene and while awaiting the arrival of SWAT officers and trained negotiators, they encountered the man which resulted in an officer involved shooting. The man is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.
