From Crisis to Care: The Critical Role of Victim Services in Fairfax County
Fairfax County, VA – Each year, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of those impacted by crime. From April 19–25, we recognize this important observance by reaffirming our commitment to ensuring survivors have access to justice, resources, and healing.
Observed annually since 1981, NCVRW highlights the progress of the victims’ rights movement while challenging communities to remove barriers and strengthen services for those impacted by crime. It is both a time to reflect on how far we have come and a call to continue advancing services for those affected by crime.

The Fairfax County Police Department’s Victim Services Division (VSD) plays a vital role in supporting victims in the aftermath of crime. Victim Services Specialists provide compassionate, trauma-informed care responding directly to crime scenes and crisis situations and assisting individuals as they navigate the criminal justice process and access critical resources. From the first moments of crisis through long-term recovery, the VSD team remains committed to supporting victims every step of the way.
How We Support Victims
Victim Services Specialists offer a range of services, including:
- On-Scene Response and Crisis Intervention – Responding alongside detectives to provide immediate emotional support and stabilization during critical incidents.
- Emotional Support – Helping victims process trauma and cope with the ongoing impact of crime.
- Criminal Justice Guidance – Assisting victims in understanding their rights and navigating court proceedings.
- Resource Coordination – Connecting individuals with emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, and financial assistance.
- Safety Planning – Developing personalized strategies to enhance safety and well-being.
Under Virginia law, victims have the right to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect. They are entitled to information about their case, protection from intimidation, and access to victim compensation programs. The VSD team works to ensure every victim is informed of these rights and receives the support they need.

Supporting Survivors
During NCVRW, we encourage our community to stand with victims by raising awareness, offering support, and utilizing available resources. If you or someone you know has been affected by crime, assistance is available.
