Drone as First Responder Program Delivers Rapid Results in One Week
Fairfax County, VA— In just one week, the Fairfax County Police Department’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) program has played a key role in the swift and safe resolution of five separate incidents highlighted below; demonstrating the program’s speed, precision, and growing impact across the county.
Launched earlier this year, the DFR program deployed strategically positioned drones operated by the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) to respond to calls for service. With an average response time of under two minutes, these drones are often first on scene, providing real-time intelligence that enhances decision-making and officer safety.
Rapid Response to Mental Health Emergencies
Over the past week, DFR assisted in two separate incidents involving individuals experiencing mental health crises. In both cases, drones responded and arrived before other officers and provided live aerial visibility that guided responding units directly to the individuals’ locations. This rapid response enabled officers to safely intervene and connect both individuals with the services they needed.
Centreville Burglary Suspect Quickly Apprehended
On April 13, at 4:45 a.m., DFR and other drone resources were deployed within 30 seconds after a detective observed a burglary suspect in the Centreville area. The drone quickly located the suspect and tracked his movements to a nearby residence. Using this real-time intelligence, officers obtained a search warrant and took the suspect into custody without further incident.
Fair Oaks Assault Suspect Located in Under One Minute
On April 15, at 1:01 p.m., an assault suspect fled into a shopping center in the Fair Oaks area. A responding DFR drone located the suspect in less than one minute and maintained continuous observation until officers arrived. This coordinated response led to a safe and efficient arrest.
Fair Oaks Crash Located by Drone
On April 16, at 2:53 p.m., officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a crash with possible entrapment in the Fair Oaks area. Our dispatch center received an automatic crash notification indicating a vehicle had been involved in a collision. Officers checked the area for several minutes but could not locate the crash. A DFR drone was launched to the location and was able to spot a vehicle that had left the roadway, down a ravine, hidden from view. Detectives working in the Real Time Crime Center guided responding officers to the location and retrieved the driver.
One Week of Results and Ongoing Impact
These five incidents, all occurring within a single week, highlight the effectiveness of the DFR program in reducing response times, improving situational awareness, and supporting safer outcomes for both officers and the community.
As the program continues to expand, it remains a key part of the department’s commitment to innovation, transparency, and public safety.
The Drone as First Responder program reflects FCPD’s continued commitment to leveraging technology to enhance emergency response and support the safety of Fairfax County residents.
