Body Recovered From Lake After Canoe Capsizes at Burke Lake Park
West Springfield Police District – Around 2:20 this afternoon, police and fire units responded to Burke Lake Park after a canoe tipped over with three people on board. One adult and one child were rescued by staff before the fire department arrived, but the third occupant, 70-year-old James Peith, of Clifton, was no longer in sight. Our officers, along with members of the fire department, helicopter, Underwater Search and Recovery, and Marine Patrol searched for several hours before his body was found around 6 p.m. using sonar equipment. Peith’s body is being taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.
