Major Traffic Delays After Dump Truck Traps Driver and Officer Hit While Directing Traffic

Sully Police District – Several people, including one of our own officers, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in two separate crashes at the same location this morning. Officers initially responded to the southbound lanes of Route 28 near I-66 in Centreville around 4:15 a.m. for a crash involving a box truck, dump truck and a sedan. The dump truck overturned in the crash and landed on top of the sedan with the driver still inside. All three drivers had non-life-threatening injuries.
As a result of this crash, power lines were knocked into the roadway and traffic signals were out. Route 28 was shut down in both directions. Northbound lanes reopened around 5:30 a.m. and southbound lanes around 6:30 a.m. Members of our Motor Squad arrived to direct traffic while power and traffic signals were being restored.
While directing traffic, one of our officers was hit by a car. He was taken to the hospital and his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. The driver remained on scene and our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is investigating.
Our detectives are asking all members of the media who responded to the original accident scene to check for any footage that may have captured the second accident involving the officer. A camera crew is believed to have been in the area when the crash occurred. If you have any photos or video, please contact us.
Anyone who witnessed either accident is asked to call the CRU witness line at 703-280-0543.
We thank everyone for the outpouring support and well wishes we have received. Our thoughts are with our officer, all those involved in this morning’s accidents, and their families.
