Fairfax County, VA – As our community prepares to celebrate Independence Day weekend, the Fairfax County Police Department encourages residents to celebrate safely while enjoying fireworks, barbecues, outdoor events, and time with family and friends.

With large crowds, increased travel, and heightened activity expected across the region, planning ahead and staying alert will help ensure a safe and memorable celebration.

Attending Events or Gatherings?

  • Plan ahead: Expect heavy traffic, limited parking and large crowds throughout the holiday weekend. Leave early, monitor traffic conditions and share plans with someone you trust.
  • Stay aware in crowds: Keep personal belongings secure and remain alert to surroundings. Report suspicious or unusual activity to event staff or law enforcement.
  • Be considerate of others: Watch for pedestrians, children, cyclists, and individuals with disabilities. Patience and awareness help keep public spaces safe for everyone.
  • Don’t drive impaired: Those who plan to drink should arrange transportation in advance, including rideshare services, taxis or a designated sober driver. Our DWI Enforcement Squad will be active throughout the weekend

Celebrating at Home?

  • Supervise children at all times: Never leave children unattended near fireworks, grills or pools. Keep matches, lighters and other hazardous items secured.
  • Refresh emergency supplies: Ensure first aid kits are stocked and accessible. Know how to respond to burns or minor injuries and call 911 in emergencies.
  • Secure your home: Lock doors and windows even while at home. Verify that alarms and security cameras are functioning properly. Report suspicious activity to the non-emergency line: 703-691-2131.

Traveling Out of Town?

  • Secure your property: Lock all entry points, including garages and basement windows. Reinforce sliding doors and activate alarm systems if available.
  • Pause social media updates: Avoid sharing travel plans or location updates until after returning home.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor for help: Have someone collect mail, move trash bins, and keep an eye on your property.
  • Maintain exterior visibility: Trim shrubs and trees near entry points to reduce hiding spots.

Traveling on Roads?

  • Drive responsibly: Obey speed limits, avoid distractions, and always wear a seatbelt. Expect increased traffic across the region throughout the holiday weekend.
  • Be visible and cautious: Motorcyclists and cyclists should wear reflective gear and use proper safety equipment. Drivers should stay alert and watch blind spots.
  • Watch for wildlife: Deer and other animals are more active during summer evenings—use extra caution on rural and wooded roads.

On the Water?

  • Wear life jackets: Ensure all passengers wear properly fitted, approved life jackets.
  • Stay sober on the water: Never operate a boat or swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Have a float plan: Share your route and expected return time with someone on shore and carry a charged phone and emergency supplies.
  • Check conditions before heading out: Review weather, water temperature and currents before heading out. The FCPD Marine Patrol Unit will be active throughout the weekend.
