Charges Filed Against Driver Who Caused Serious Crash in Herndon Area; 7 Remain Hospitalized

Sully Police Station –  A Prince George’s County man is facing multiple felony charges this afternoon following a crime spree and serious collision in the Centreville area. Brandon Stefon Vinson, 28, of Adelphi remains in the hospital today, as does a woman and five children who were also hospitalized after last night’s crash. The suspect is charged with carjacking, speed to elude, two assaults on police officers and receiving stolen property. Just this afternoon, our officers called for back-up at the hospital when the suspect tried to wrestle out of his handcuffs. Two of our officers who were injured by the suspect as he was being arrested had minor injuries and are expected to return to work.

Our preliminary investigation shows that at about 7:45 last night, a call came in for an assault on a child. Officers responded to the 6100 block of Early Autumn Drive in Centreville and learned a man had randomly knocked on the door of the home and hit a young child who answered the door.  The suspect then fled the scene in a car that was reported stolen as a result of a carjacking in Hyattsville at about 6 pm last night. The suspect then crashed into a pick-up truck at Stone Road and Lee Highway and carjacked that driver. He then stole a trailer and attached it to the pick-up.  Responding officers saw the suspect fleeing in the stolen pick-up with the trailer attached and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect led officers on a short pursuit which ended at the intersection of Centreville Road and Frying Pan Road as the suspect ran a red light and collided with a van in the intersection.  Determined to avoid capture, the suspect then ran from the intersection but officers managed to catch up with him. The suspect then assaulted both officers as he again tried to get away.

As a result of the second crash, one child was ejected from the minivan and flown to the hospital and remains in critical condition. The driver and four other children in the minivan went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers immediately provided first aid to the ejected passenger. Fairfax1, our helicopter, which assisted with the pursuit, immediately landed after the crash so the crew could assist with the injuries.

The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.  Both victims who were assaulted by the suspect also sustained minor injuries. The suspect is facing multiple additional charges. A photo is not currently available.
