Investigation Underway Following In-Custody Death
*** Chief Roessler plans to brief the media at Public Safety Headquarters (12099 Government Center Parkway) at 11:30 this morning in the Press Briefing Room on the 2nd Floor***
We are actively investigating an in-custody death in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. Patrol officers from our Franconia District Station responded to a domestic call for service at 4:35 yesterday afternoon involving a 31-year-old man acting irrationally. The caller was a family member who was struck in the head. When officers arrived on scene, they found the family member outside the house. The man was inside the house, naked, and possibly experiencing a mental health crisis. When officers went to take the man into custody to prevent him from harming himself or others, he resisted and ignored commands. The man did not have a weapon. As officers were working to gain control, the man became unresponsive. Medics were on scene and immediately began CPR. Fire department personnel took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Six officers have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the criminal and administrative investigations. Once the criminal investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
