How to Have a Safe Yet Spooky Halloween
We like Halloween to be as spooky as possible – but that doesn’t mean it can’t be safe, too! 👻 As you’re making your plans for Halloween night, please keep these safety tips in mind.

For parents:
- Plan and discuss your child’s route if you aren’t joining them for trick-or-treating
- Remind children that they should never enter a stranger’s house
- Make sure they know to cross at intersections or corners, not between parked cars
- Trick-or-treat in groups – it’s more fun AND safer that way
- Always send your child out with a flashlight – bonus points for reflective costumes!
For drivers:
- Stay alert, as children tend to be preoccupied with Halloween festivities
- Leave driveways and parking spaces slowly, and double-check that no one is in the way
- Drive slowly, particularly through residential areas
- Do not pass vehicles stopped in the roadway, as they may be stopped for pedestrians
- Don’t let yourself get distracted by your phone – avoid distractions and stay alert!
For our seniors:
- Keep your lights on, even if you aren’t participating in Halloween – you can put up a sign if necessary
- For everyone’s safety, keep trick-or-treaters outside
- Remove tripping hazards from your porch and entryway to the home
- Talk to your neighbors – ask them to check in on you Halloween evening, hand out treats as a team!
- If you aren’t going to be home, kindly ask a neighbor or friend to keep an eye on it
For pet owners:
- Keep chocolate up and away from your pet, as it can be poisonous to them
- Watch for wagging tails near Jack-o’-lanterns, as they may have candles inside
- Not all trick-or-treaters like dogs – make sure to keep your pet on a leash or behind a gate away from the front door!
- Make sure your pet has identification on in the event that they accidentally get loose
We hope you all have a safe and hauntingly good Halloween! 🎃
