UPDATE: Two Men In Custody for 2016 Homicide in Alexandria Area of Fairfax County

Mount Vernon Police District – Two Washington, D.C. men are in custody today after detectives linked them to the murder of Tarreece Sampson on May 20, 2016. Our officers were called to the 6000 block of Richmond Highway at 2:20 a.m. for a report of a man who had been shot. Sampson was found with a gunshot wound to the upper body and pronounced dead at the scene.

Dedicated to finding those responsible for his murder, detectives conducted a multi-year investigation that led them to two men. Tre’Sur Hawkins, 19, was charged this afternoon with first degree murder. He will be booked at the Adult Detention Center and held without bond. Charles Benson, 24, was arrested on September 4, 2018 in Washington, D.C., for this murder with the assistance of the United States Marshal Service, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, and Metropolitan Police Department. Benson was extradited to Fairfax County on October 17 and has been in custody since. We did not initially release information about Benson’s arrest in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and as to not compromise investigative leads that led us to identify Hawkins.

Detectives believe Sampson did not know Hawkins or Benson, and randomly encountered them on Richmond Highway where Hawkins and Benson were breaking into cars.
