Help Protect Your Motorcycle from Theft So You Can Enjoy More Time on the Road.

Fairfax, VA – The delightful days of summer present an opportunity to enjoy a motorcycle ride, but motorcycle owners should know there is a higher chance of theft once they hit the road.

July is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month. The average motorcycle costs range between $4,000 and $20,000 making them a premium target for theft. Once stolen, the motorcycles are either sold whole or stripped down into parts. Because motorcycle parts can be easily altered and reused the recovery rates for stolen motorcycles is lower than that of vehicles.

In 2023, several motorcycles have been reported stolen to the Fairfax County Police Department. Although this number is not excessive, it still affects our community members who enjoy two wheels and the open road. With the community’s help, we can limit their success and prevent criminals from taking property.

MOTORCYCLE THEFT PREVENTION TIPS

  • Park your motorcycle in well-lit areas
  • Lock your ignition and remove your keys when riding.
  • Lock your motorcycle even when it is stored in a garage.
  • Consider investing in an alarm system.
  • Keep your motorcycle title separate from the bike itself.
  • Place unique markings on your motorcycle and take photos of them. If your bike is ever stolen, you use these markings to identify your property.
  • Don’t walk away while leaving your motorcycle running.
  • Consider purchasing a disc lock.
  • Consider hiding a GPS device on your motorcycle so that if it’s ever stolen it can be tracked.
  • Use a heavy-duty chain and ground anchor if parking your bike in a public lot.
  • Report suspicious activity to our non-emergency number at (703) 691-2131. If you have an emergency, call 911.
