FCPD Detectives Shatter the Silence in Domestic Violence Cases
Fairfax, VA – – Our Major Crimes Bureau’s Domestic Violence Squad is comprised of dedicated detectives who specialize in investigating cases of domestic violence involving familial and intimate partners. The Domestic Violence Squad collaborates and works closely with specialists from our Victim Services Division to ensure a comprehensive victim-centric approach when working on these significant cases. Domestic Violence detectives strive to ensure all victims are treated with dignity and respect as they navigate the criminal justice system by using all available resources and community partnerships to help provide superior resources to Domestic Violence victims.
What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic Violence refers to a pattern of abusive behaviors used by one person to gain power and control over another in a close or intimate relationship. These behaviors can be physical, emotional, psychological, financial, or sexual in nature and can cause significant harm, fear, and trauma for the victim. Domestic Violence is a widespread issue affecting millions globally. A significant number of Domestic Violence cases go unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of awareness about available support systems. It’s a serious and pervasive issue that affects individuals of all backgrounds and genders. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, seeking help and support is crucial. What do Domestic Violence detectives do?
Fairfax County Domestic Violence Detectives are law enforcement officers specializing in investigating cases of felony acts of domestic violence. Their goal is to ensure that Domestic Violence cases are thoroughly investigated, victims receive necessary support, and perpetrators are held accountable for their actions through the legal system.
In July 2023 Virginia Law 18.2-51.6 regarding Strangulation was amended to include Suffocation as a felony offense for any person without consent in a way which impedes blood circulation or respiration of another person by knowingly, intentionally, and unlawfully blocking or obstructing the airway of such person resulting in wounding, or bodily injury. Approximately a third of all reported Domestic Violence Cases for 2023 in Fairfax County have included some form of Strangulation and or Suffocation.
Fairfax County Police Department strives to be at the forefront of Domestic Violence education and prevention. This October, Detectives from the Domestic Violence Squad will partner with our Victim Services Specialists to provide enhanced training for Patrol response to strangulation and/ or suffocation cases.
