Detectives Investigating Single-Vehicle Fatal Crash in Springfield

Franconia Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating an overnight fatal crash believed to be speed related.

At 1:21 a.m. officers responded to Old Keene Mill Road and Backlick Road for a 2019 Nissan Rogue that crashed into the jersey barrier. The driver, Issac Garcia Mendoza, 21, of Oxon Hill, MD was pronounced deceased at the scene. Witnesses told detectives they observed Mendoza driving northbound on Backlick Road at a high rate of speed. Mendoza failed to turn onto Old Keene Mill Road and struck the barrier head-on.

Preliminarily, detectives believe speed is a factor in the crash. Detectives are continuing to investigate to determine if alcohol or narcotics were also factors in the crash.
