NVRIC Achieves Intelligence Excellence; Named Fusion Center of the Year

Fairfax County, VA – On Wednesday, the Northern Virginia Regional Intelligence Center (NVRIC) was honored as the Fusion Center of the Year by the National Fusion Center Association. The NVRIC was one of the 80+ Fusion Centers across the United States considered for this prestigious recognition.

The NVRIC, jointly operated by FCPD, Virginia State Police, and 20 local, state, and federal agencies, facilitates the pooling of resources, expertise, and information to help keep Northern Virginia safe. This collaboration of work aims to enhance the identification, detection, prevention, and response to terrorist and criminal activities, employing a comprehensive approach to combatting all types of crimes and hazards.

Over the past year, the NVRIC’s team has navigated a surge in demand; processing 772 requests for information and 1,130 tips and leads, marking a substantial increase from previous years. Thier dedicated team of detectives and analysts delivered intelligence products, engaged in outreach activities with partners, supported special events, and launched two pioneering initiatives to bolster the safety of Northern Virginia.

First was the 2023 launch of FCPD’s industry-leading Threat Assessment and Management (TAM) unit. This new unit uses a proactive, multi-disciplinary approach to address the challenges of vetting, analyzing, tracking, and preventing potential acts of targeted violence. It also offers intervention assistance for individuals at risk of engaging in violent behavior, ensuring comprehensive support and mitigation strategies. Since its inception, the TAM initiative has reviewed over 400 cases, successfully resolving several without incident and providing vital support to prevent acts of violence.

Second, the NVRIC developed a more proactive counterintelligence program to help Northern Virginia leaders stay ahead of potential threats. Through comprehensive training programs and proactive engagement with partners, they have not only heightened regional awareness but also sparked interest from other fusion centers. Through daily reports and command post support, NVRIC keeps executives and partners informed about upcoming events, bias incidents, and suspicious activities.

The NVRIC team’s innovation and dedication to keeping people safe exemplify the best in fusion center practices, setting a high standard for the industry. The FCPD congratulates our detectives, analysts and staff at the NVRIC for their work in winning this year’s Fusion Center of the Year award.
