FCPD Shares Lifesaving Tips to Safeguard Seniors

Fairfax County, VA – FCPD emphasizes the need to protect our vulnerable community members, especially older adults at higher risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke and dehydration. Recently, numerous missing seniors have been safely located after briefly missing, but it has taken substantial FCPD resources to ensure their safe return. To better protect our loved ones, it is essential to review safety tips and available resources.

Steps to Enhance Senior Safety

  • Personal Safety Devices: Encourage the use of medical alert systems or GPS tracking devices for individuals who are at risk of wandering.
  • Emergency Preparedness: For older adults, consider printing emergency contact lists and adding them to clothing, wallets, purses, and other items they regularly carry. Consider creating a ready-to-go bag with essential items, such as first-aid supplies and medications.
  • Check-In Regularly: Make it a habit to check-in on older family members or neighbors. A simple call, text message, or visit can make a difference in their day and ensure their safety.
  • Plan Summer Outings Wisely: Plan outings during cooler parts of the day. Be sure to wear light, breathable clothing, and stay hydrated.
  • Educate Others: Share this information with friends and family members to raise awareness about the needs of vulnerable individuals in our community.
