Join Us for “Walk, Bike, Ride to School Safely Day” and Ensure a Safe Start to the School Year

Fairfax County, VA – Join the Fairfax County Police Department for “Walk, Bike, Ride to School Safely Day” and help keep our Fairfax County children safe on their way to and from school, every day.

On August 19th, as our students prepare to head back to school, FCPD aims to promote a safe and enjoyable start to the school year by encouraging parents, guardians, and community members to adopt safe transportation practices and help ensure the well-being of our young students.

Whether they are walking, biking, or riding, FCPD wants to create a safe environment for all. To that end, our officers suggest the following essential tips for parents and community members:

  • Plan Ahead: Familiarize yourself with your child’s route to school. Identify safe crossing points, well-lit areas, and designated bike lanes.
  • Walk In Groups: Encourage your child to walk with friends or neighbors whenever possible. A group can be more visible to drivers and provide companionship.
  • Use Crosswalks and Signals: Teach your child the importance of using crosswalks and obeying traffic signals.
  • Be Visible: Dress your child in bright or reflective clothing, especially during early morning hours or in low light conditions.
  • Practice Safe Riding: If your child rides a bike, ensure they know the rules of the road, such as using hand signals to indicate turns and obeying traffic laws. Make sure they always wear a properly fitted helmet to reduce the risk of head injuries.
  • Drivers, Be Alert: If you’re driving during school hours, be extra cautious around school zones and bus stops. Follow posted speed limits and avoid distractions.
  • Community Involvement: Consider forming a walking or biking group within your neighborhood. This can create a sense of community and ensure safety in numbers.
  • Encourage Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with your child. Encourage them to share any safety concerns they might have while commuting.

On August 19th, we invite all parents, guardians, and community members to participate in “Walk, Bike, Ride to School Safely Day” by taking this opportunity to walk or bike alongside your child, reinforcing the importance of safe transportation practices.
