FCPD Hosts Public Safety Suicide Prevention Conference on World Suicide Prevention Day
Fairfax County, VA – Yesterday, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) hosted a Public Safety Suicide Prevention Conference, drawing over 130 first responders from across the National Capital area. Held on World Suicide Prevention Day, the event highlighted the importance of mental health support for those on the front lines of public safety.

The conference featured two powerful keynote speakers. The first presenter, Dr. Tamika Lett, shared her deeply personal story as the widow of a Newport News police officer who tragically died by suicide in 2022 after struggling with mental health challenges. Dr. Lett, a professional in substance use, mental health, and trauma-informed care, emphasized the critical need for proactive mental health support for first responders and their families.
The second speaker, Lieutenant Tommy Bolin, a 28-year veteran in the fire service, delivered a compelling talk on his own experiences with the cumulative impact of unresolved trauma and sleep deprivation. Lieutenant Bolin, who speaks nationwide on these issues, underscored the urgent need for mental health resources to help first responders navigate the psychological toll of their work.
The conference was hosted by the Fairfax County Public Safety Wellness Center, a key part of FCPD’s Health and Wellness Division. This innovative center provides a comprehensive approach to supporting the mental and physical health of public safety personnel. It offers a welcoming and inclusive environment with services ranging from private and group counseling to specialized mental health care.
