Fairfax County, VA – FCPD’s Traffic Safety Division is instrumental in enhancing roadway safety and supporting the department’s day-to-day operations. Through targeted initiatives and community engagement, the division plays a critical role in reducing traffic incidents and promoting safe driving practices across Fairfax County.

Who We Are:
The Traffic Safety Division, established in 1955, falls under the Operational Support Bureau. The division is comprised of eight specialized units:
- Motors Squad
- Motor Carrier Safety
- Crash Reconstruction Unit
- DWI Squad
- Impound Officer
- Traffic Safety Officer
- VDOT Liaison
- Photo Speed Enforcement
The division aims to reduce traffic-related fatalities and educate the community about roadway safety. These specialized units undergo extensive training unique to their daily operations.
What We Do:
Motors Squad: The Motors Squad is focused on traffic enforcement and management. They actively enforce traffic laws, manage incidents for efficient traffic flow, and provide escort services for various events.
Motor Carrier Safety: The Motor Carrier Safety (MCS) Unit enforces regulations related to commercial motor vehicles. They ensure road safety and compliance within the commercial transportation sector.
Crash Reconstruction Unit: The Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) investigates serious and fatal vehicle crashes by meticulously analyzing and reconstructing crash scenes.
DWI Squad: The DWI Squad participates in sobriety checkpoints year-round and proactively identifies impaired drivers through saturation patrols. This squad significantly contributes to reducing impaired driving incidents and enhancing public safety.
Impound Officer: The Impoundment Officer’s primary duties involve handling complaints related to violations of inoperable vehicles.
Traffic Safety Officer: The Traffic Safety Officer plays a crucial role in promoting the safety of all road users through innovative traffic safety solutions and educational programs. They focus on initiatives like speed enforcement and pedestrian safety.
VDOT Liaison: The VDOT Liaison Officer facilitates collaboration among key agencies to enhance traffic flow and safety in Fairfax County.
Photo Speed Enforcement: The program aims to change drivers’ behavior and make our roads safer.
