Put Safety Tips on the Menu This Thanksgiving

Fairfax County, VA – As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with family gatherings, delicious meals, and festive traditions, the Fairfax County Police Department is sharing safety tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Taking to the Open Road?

  • Obey Traffic Laws: Always obey speed limits and traffic laws and put any distractions down.
  • Wear Proper Gear: When riding a motorcycle, always wear a properly fitted helmet and gear.
  • Stay Visible: Whether walking or riding, make sure to wear bright-colored or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions.
  • Stay Clear of Blind Spots: Avoid riding in the blind spots of cars and trucks. If you can’t see the driver’s face in their side mirrors, they can’t see you.

Going Out of Town?

  • Don’t Forget to Lock Up: Make sure you take some extra time to lock all your doors and windows and set your alarm system before leaving your home. In addition to locking doors, place a rod or dowel in the track of sliding doors to prevent them from being forced open.
  • Secure Belongings: Keep valuables out of sight from windows and consider storing your items in a safe.
  • Install Lights and Cameras: Install motion-activated lighting and security cameras around the exterior of your home, especially near entry points. Check the batteries and ensure they are in working order before you leave.
  • Inform a Trusted Neighbor: Let a trusted neighbor know about your travel plans. They can keep an eye on your property, pick up any deliveries and report any suspicious activities.
  • Trim Trees and Bushes: Trim trees and bushes near windows to eliminate hiding spots for burglars.
  • Social Media: Do not advertise your absence on social media. Wait until you come back from vacation to post about your trip, even among trusted friends.

Heading to an Event?

  • Plan Ahead: Expect increased traffic during the holiday weekend. Plan your trips in advance and allow extra travel time to reach your destination safely.
  • Obey Traffic Laws: Adhere to all traffic laws, including speed limits, seatbelt use and no texting while driving.
  • Designate a Sober Driver: If you plan to consume alcohol, ensure you have a designated sober driver or alternative transportation arranged.
  • Stay Alert: Be mindful and aware of pedestrians, cyclists, and children, especially in popular areas.

The safety of our community is a collective effort. We encourage community members to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. You can report emergencies by dialing 911, and non-emergency incidents to 703-691-2131.
