Protect Your Car’s Hidden Gems: Tips to Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft
Fairfax County, VA- Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise nationwide due to the high value of the precious metals inside, and FCPD officers and detectives are actively working to solve these crimes. Protect yourself and your vehicle with these essential tips:

Park Smart
- Always park in well-lit, high-traffic areas.
- When possible, park in a secured garage or gated area.
- At home, consider installing motion-detecting lights or security cameras near your driveway.
Secure Your Vehicle
- Install an anti-theft device like a catalytic converter shield or lock. These devices make theft more time-consuming and less attractive to criminals.
- Engrave your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate number onto the catalytic converter. This deters theft and helps law enforcement track stolen parts.
Stay Alert
- Be aware of suspicious activity in your neighborhood, especially during the late-night or early-morning hours when thefts are most common.
- Report any suspicious behavior to FCPD immediately.
While it may not be possible to prevent all thefts, taking a few proactive steps can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a target. Should your catalytic converter be stolen, it is important to report the theft to FCPD promptly by calling the non-emergency line at 703-691-2131 or 911.
