Bumper to Bluff: How to Avoid Parking Lot Repair Scams

Fairfax County, VA- Recently, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) has received reports of a scam targeting drivers in local parking lots. Scammers approach people under the guise of offering quick, affordable car repairs, but instead leave behind poor work, damage, and a lighter wallet. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself, your money, and your vehicle.

The Scam

A person approaches you in a parking lot, claiming to be affiliated with a well-known car brand. They offer to fix minor dents or scratches on your car while you shop. The price sounds reasonable, and the repair seems quick and easy.

Once the work is “done,” victims often return to find low-quality results, sticky substances left on the car, or even further damage. In some cases, the scammer pressures victims to pay more than originally quoted and only accepts cash or gift cards. By the time the fraud is realized, the scammer is gone.

Common Red Flags:

  • Unsolicited offers for auto repair in a parking lot
  • Mention of recognizable brand names to gain trust
  • Requests for cash or gift card payments
  • High-pressure tactics urging you to act quickly
  • Claims that the “repair” can’t be touched for 24 hours

Protect Yourself:

  • Politely decline and walk away. Reputable auto repair services do not operate this way.
  • Never pay with cash or gift cards to someone offering on-the-spot repairs.
  • Take your vehicle to a trusted auto body shop with proper credentials and reviews.
  • Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
