Heat Waves & Right of Ways: Your Summer Safety Checklist

Fairfax County, VA – Summer in Fairfax County means more sunshine, longer days, and more activity across our neighborhoods. Whether you’re heading to the pool, walking your dog, or just enjoying the warm weather, safety is key. The Fairfax County Police Department is here to help you enjoy the season responsibly.

Here are some simple, yet critical tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this summer:

Look Out—School’s Still in Session (Sometimes!)

School may be out for summer, but not every school is empty. Many Fairfax County schools are still hosting summer school, camps, and other activities. If you see a school zone light flashing, slow down. Follow the posted speed limit and stay alert for children crossing.

Expect More People—On Foot, On Wheels, On the Move

Summer brings more people outdoors:

  • Children are playing in neighborhoods.
  • Teens and families are walking, running, and biking.
  • Motorcyclists are hitting the roads in higher numbers.

Always drive with caution, especially in neighborhoods, near parks, and around trails. Look twice before turning or changing lanes, and give bikes and motorcycles plenty of space.

Distracted Driving? Let’s Not Go There

Warmer days mean busier roads and more distractions. Avoid using your phone or other devices while driving. A quick glance away can lead to a life-changing crash. Stay focused, stay alert.

Water Safety: Stay Afloat with These Reminders

With pools, lakes, and splash pads open, water safety is essential, especially for families with young children:

  • Never leave children unattended near water.
  • Make sure kids wear life jackets when appropriate.
  • Stay within arm’s reach of inexperienced swimmers.
  • Learn CPR; it saves lives.

Even shallow water can pose a risk. Constant supervision and clear rules are non-negotiable.

Hot Cars Can Kill—Every Minute Counts

On a 90-degree day, a car’s interior can reach over 130 degrees in minutes. It is never safe to leave a child or pet in a parked car, even for “just a minute.” Roll down the windows? Not enough. Leave the car running? Not reliable. The only safe option is to take them with you. Always.

Buckle Up the Right Way—Especially for Kids

Heading out on a summer road trip or even just across town? Make sure your child’s car seat or booster seat is properly installed.

  • Check the harness placement.
  • Make sure seats are snug and secure.
  • Visit one of our free car seat inspection stations if you need help.

Correctly installed seats save lives. Check out our community events blog, shared every Thursday, for car seat inspection events near you.

Check In on Vulnerable Neighbors

Extreme heat can be dangerous for elderly or medically vulnerable neighbors. Take a moment to check in. Make sure they have access to fans or air conditioning, plenty of water, and help if they need it.
