Stars, Stripes and Safety: Tips for 4th of July
Fairfax County, VA – As our community prepares to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, barbecues, outdoor fun, and family gatherings, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) wants to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and memorable holiday.

Attending Events or Gatherings?
- Plan Ahead: Expect traffic delays, full parking lots, and large crowds. Leave early, check traffic apps, and share your itinerary with family or friends.
- Designate a Sober Driver: Plan transportation in advance if you plan to consume alcohol. Use ride-share services, taxis, or assign a sober driver. Our DWI Enforcement Squad will be actively patrolling.
- Stay Alert in Crowds: Keep your belongings close and be alert of your surroundings. If something doesn’t feel right, say something.
- Look Out for Others: Be extra mindful of pedestrians, children, cyclists, and those with disabilities. Be patient—everyone wants to enjoy the holiday safely.
Celebrating at Home?
- Supervise Children Closely: Ensure that children are never left alone near fireworks, grills, or pools. Store matches, lighters, and sharp objects out of reach.
- Update Your First Aid Kit: Check that your first aid kit is stocked and that you know how to respond to minor injuries or burns. In case of emergency, call 911 immediately.
- Secure Your Home: Lock all doors and windows—even when you are home. Make sure outdoor and indoor security cameras are functioning. Report suspicious activity to our non-emergency line: 703-691-2131.

Going Out of Town?
- Lock It Down: Secure all entry points, including garage doors and basement windows. Place rods in sliding doors and double-check your alarm system is armed.
- Keep It Off Social Media: Avoid announcing your travel plans online. Wait to share vacation photos until after you return home.
- Ask a Neighbor for Help: Trusted neighbors can collect mail, put out trash cans, and watch for unusual activity. Share your contact info in case of an emergency.
- Trim Landscaping: Cut back overgrown bushes and trees near entry points to reduce hiding spots for burglars.
Taking to the Open Road?
- Drive Smart: Follow all speed limits, stay off your phone, and wear your seatbelt. Be especially cautious around holiday traffic.
- Motorcycle or Bike Rider? Wear a properly fitted helmet and visible, reflective clothing. Stay out of drivers’ blind spots and use hand signals.
- Watch for Animals: Deer and other wildlife are more active in the summer. Slow down and stay alert, especially on rural or wooded roads.
Hitting the Water?
- Wear a Life Jacket: Make sure everyone aboard is wearing an approved life jacket—no exceptions.
- Stay Sober on the Water: Never boat or swim under the influence. Alcohol impairs judgment and slows reflexes.
- Have a Float Plan: Let someone know your boating route and expected return time. Keep a charged phone and emergency supplies onboard.
- Check Conditions: Know the weather, water temperatures, and currents before launching. Our Marine Patrol Unit will be out ensuring safety on all waterways.
