Full Speed Isn’t Ahead: Tackling Reckless Driving in Fairfax County
Fairfax County, VA – Speeding remains one of the most dangerous behaviors on our roadways, and it’s something our FCPD officers confront daily. Whether it’s the specialized focus of our Traffic Division or the proactive efforts of patrol officers across the county, the Fairfax County Police Department is committed to identifying reckless drivers and reducing the serious risks that come with excessive speed.

Recent Traffic Stops: Caught on Camera
In recent weeks, officers have stopped drivers going well above the speed limit—some over 115 miles per hour. Others were seen aggressively weaving through traffic or running red lights. These are not minor violations; they’re high-risk situations that could easily end in tragedy.
Why Speeding is So Dangerous—Even on “Empty” Roads
It may feel safe to drive faster when roads are clear, but that’s when speeding becomes more deceptive and dangerous.
- Reduced Reaction Time: The faster you drive, the less time you have to react to unexpected situations like a pedestrian crossing, a vehicle braking suddenly, or a car pulling out of a side street.
- Increased Crash Severity: Higher speeds result in more forceful impacts, increasing the likelihood of serious injury or death.
- Loss of Vehicle Control: At high speeds, a small overcorrection or moment of distraction can send your vehicle off the road or into oncoming traffic.
- Unpredictable Road Conditions: In an area like Fairfax County, where roads vary in terrain and congestion, speed amplifies the risk of crashes in curves, on wet pavement, or near construction zones.
The Role of Enforcement
Our Traffic Division conducts regular enforcement campaigns in high-risk areas based on crash data, community concerns, and officer observations. At the same time, our patrol officers across the county are making real-time decisions to stop dangerous drivers when they see them.
Every stop is an opportunity—not just to issue a citation, but to potentially prevent the next crash.
To support these efforts, we also continue to partner with the Virginia State Police in our multi-agency Road Shark initiative—a high-visibility enforcement and education campaign aimed at curbing aggressive driving, speeding, and other dangerous behaviors on our roadways. The next wave of Road Shark begins August 4 and will include intensified traffic enforcement throughout the county.
What You Can Do
Speeding is preventable. Here are a few simple but effective steps all drivers can take:
- Always follow the posted speed limit.
- Build extra time into your travel plans so you’re not rushed.
- Stay alert for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles entering your path.
- Avoid distractions, especially when driving at higher speeds.
- Remember that safety is more important than getting there a few minutes faster.
Lives depend on your decisions behind the wheel. Slow down. Drive responsibly. Help us make Fairfax County’s roads safer for everyone.
