Smooth Sailing into September: Labor Day Safety Reminders from FCPD
Fairfax County, VA – As we prepare to say goodbye to summer, the Fairfax County Police Department is sharing important safety reminders to help you enjoy a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.
Heading to a Labor Day Event?
Plan Ahead: Expect heavier traffic across Fairfax County and surrounding areas. Check routes in advance, allow for delays, and stay patient on the road.
Follow the Rules: Obey all traffic laws. That means wearing your seatbelt, staying within the speed limit, and keeping your phone down.
Drive Sober: If your plans include drinking, line up a sober ride through a friend, taxi, or rideshare app before heading out.
Stay Alert: Be especially cautious around crosswalks, parks, and event areas where children, pedestrians, and cyclists are likely to be present.

Celebrating at Home?
Supervise Kids: Keep sharp tools, fire sources, and pool areas off-limits unless children are actively supervised.
Secure Your Home: Check that home security systems are active and keep an eye on your property. Report anything suspicious to local law enforcement.
Be Prepared: Have a first aid kit within reach, and refresh yourself on basic emergency response steps, just in case.
Going Out of Town?
Lock Up: Before heading out, secure all doors and windows, set alarms, and double-check that everything’s locked up tight.
Protect Valuables: Store valuables in a secure location and keep them out of view from windows.
Notify a Neighbor: Let a trusted neighbor know you’re away so they can monitor your property, collect mail, and alert authorities if something seems off.
Be Discreet Online: Save the vacation posts until you’re back home — avoid advertising your absence on social media.

Spending Labor Day on the Water?
Wear Your Life Jacket: Everyone on board should wear a properly fitted life jacket, no exceptions.
Stay Sober: Alcohol and boating don’t mix. Always have a sober operator at the helm.
Have a Plan: Share your boating plans with someone on shore, and ensure you have emergency communication devices on board.
Watch the Weather: Stay informed of water and weather conditions before launching and while on the water.
Our Marine Patrol Unit will be actively patrolling throughout the weekend to help ensure a safe environment on our waterways.
