Man in Custody After Fatal Shooting near Dranesville
Reston Police District – Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau have arrested a man following a fatal shooting near Dranesville.
On September 15, at 5:03 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 12700 block of Fantasia Drive near Dranesville. Officers located the victim, Irfan Syed, 45, of Herndon, suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body. Syed was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Shortly after, Muhammad Muzammil, 25, of no fixed address, made contact with a community member. That individual called the non-emergency number on his behalf and reported that Muzammil had shot someone. Herndon Police responded and took Muzammil into custody.
Through their investigation, detectives determined Muzammil rammed the victim’s vehicle and then shot him multiple times. Muzammil attempted to flee the area, but his vehicle became disabled. Our K-9 Unit responded to the scene and located the firearm believed to be used in the homicide.

Muzammil was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Second-Degree Murder and Use of Firearm in Commission of Felony. He was held on no bond.
Detectives continue to conduct interviews and process evidence recovered from the scene to determine the circumstances that led up to the fatal shooting.
