Update: Driver Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter for Fatal Crash in Town of Herndon
Town of Herndon, VA — Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) have charged the driver from the November 25 fatal vehicle crash in the Town of Herndon with Involuntary Manslaughter.
Detectives determined Jose Lopez Martinez, 23, of Nokesville, was traveling westbound on Worldgate Drive when he failed to yield the right of way and struck a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue ambulance responding to a call for service. The vehicle’s front passenger, Irvin Escobar Lujuan, 35, of Sterling, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

On December 2, Lopez Martinez was additionally charged with Involuntary Manslaughter. He was held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on no bond.

Detectives Investigate Fatal Crash in Town of Herndon
Town of Herndon, VA — Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) continue to investigate a fatal vehicle crash in the Town of Herndon.
On November 25, at 4:05 p.m., officers responded to a crash involving a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department ambulance and a vehicle at Worldgate Drive and Alton Square in Herndon.
Officers determined that the ambulance was enroute to a medical emergency with their full emergency equipment activated when it attempted to turn onto Alton Square. The driver of the 2007 Hyundai failed to yield the right of way and struck the ambulance.
The vehicle’s front passenger, Irvin Escobar Lujuan, 35, of Sterling was transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition and later pronounced deceased.
The driver of the Hyundai, Jose Lopez Martinez, 23, of Nokesville, was transported to a local hospital in non-life-threatening condition. Lopez Martinez was charged with Driving While Intoxicated – 2nd in 5 Years.
Preliminarily alcohol and speed do appear to be factors in the crash.
