Safe December Begins: A Countywide Push Against Impaired Driving

Fairfax County, VA – As we round out the first week of December, our Traffic Division is continuing its focused effort on impaired driving enforcement. This time of year often comes with holiday gatherings, travel, and busy schedules, which can increase the likelihood of alcohol and drug-impaired driving. Our goal is simple: keep everyone on the road safe.

Building on Recent Enforcement Momentum

Our efforts in December build directly on the work our officers carried out throughout November and the Thanksgiving holiday period. During Thanksgiving weekend alone, twenty people were arrested for driving while intoxicated. That enforcement showed how quickly dangerous decisions can impact lives and how important it is to stay proactive during high travel periods.

Safe December marks both National Drunk and Drug Impaired Driving Prevention Month and the start of our annual alcohol enforcement campaign. Through dedicated patrols, sobriety checks, and data-driven deployment, officers will continue to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roadways.

Safety Tips for a Safe December

  • Plan a safe ride before heading out. Designate a sober driver, arrange a rideshare, or use public transportation.
  • Never get in a car with a driver who appears impaired.
  • If you host a gathering, help guests plan their ride home and provide non-alcoholic options.
  • Be careful with over-the-counter or prescription medications that may affect driving ability.
  • If you see a driver who appears impaired, call 911. You may prevent a crash.

Our Commitment

Our officers will continue patrols throughout the month with the goal of preventing crashes before they happen. Safe roadways are a shared responsibility. By combining enforcement with awareness and community engagement, we work every day to reduce impaired driving and protect everyone who lives, works, and travels in Fairfax County.
