License Plate Reader Technology Helps Locate 50 Missing Persons Since November 2022
Fairfax County, VA— The Fairfax County Police Department continues to see measurable success from its License Plate Reader (LPR) program, which has proven to be a valuable tool in locating missing persons and supporting investigations.
Most recently, on December 19, at 5:20 a.m., an officer near the intersection of Route 50 and Galesbury Lane in Chantilly was alerted to a missing person by the Axon Fleet 3 LPR system, which is installed in Fairfax County police vehicles. The officer quickly located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. After confirming the driver was the missing person, the officer notified the family, and they were safely reunited. This case marks the 50th missing person located using LPR technology by the Fairfax County Police Department.
Since the launch of the department’s expanded LPR program in November 2022, both Flock Safety and Axon Fleet 3 LPR technology have directly assisted in locating 50 missing persons across Fairfax County and the surrounding region.
Missing Persons Located Using LPR Technology
| Nov/Dec 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | Total |
| 1 | 19 | 12 | 18 | 50 |
These outcomes reflect how LPR technology supports real-time policing efforts by providing officers with timely, actionable information while they are actively patrolling. The system is especially valuable in cases involving missing persons, where time is often a critical factor.
The Fairfax County Police Department remains committed to using technology responsibly and ensuring our department uses data to inform technology deployment strategies.
As this program continues to mature, LPR technology will remain an important component of the department’s broader strategy to protect vulnerable community members and assist neighboring jurisdictions when needed.
