Operation Press Check: First 2026 Felon in Possession of a Firearm Arrest
Franconia Police District– Officers from the Franconia Police District have arrested a man for unlawfully possessing a firearm in Springfield.
On January 1, at approximately 1:33 p.m., patrol officers, along with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Personnel, responded to the 7000 block of Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield following a report of an individual unconscious near the entrance of a business.
Officers located and approached the individual and observed a firearm tucked between his legs. The firearm was safely removed, and officers identified the subject as Junior Espinal Calix, 22, of Alexandria. Officers learned Espinal Calix is a convicted felon from a prior manslaughter conviction in 2023 and is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. He was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance and later transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Espinal Calix was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Carrying a Loaded Firearm in Certain Localities. He was later released on a $5,000 secure bond.
This case is part of Fairfax County Police’s Operation Press Check, an initiative aimed at reducing illegal firearm possession by convicted felons to improve public safety.
