Sharing the Road Safely: Tips for Drivers and Pedestrians
Fairfax County, VA – As we move into the new year, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) wants to encourage drivers and pedestrians alike to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and look out for one another. Whether commuting, exercising, or enjoying time in the community, everyone plays a role in keeping our roadways and neighborhoods safe. FCPD is sharing safety tips with pedestrians and drivers as the new year begins

Tips for Pedestrians
- Use Designated Crosswalks: Whenever possible, cross the street at designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals. Wait for your turn to cross and always check for oncoming traffic before proceeding.
- Take Your Time: Rushing across the street can lead to crashes. Always take your time when crossing, even if it means waiting for a break in traffic or finding a well-lit area to cross safely.
- Stay Visible: If you’re walking at night, carry a flashlight or use your phone’s flashlight to increase visibility. Wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself more noticeable to drivers.
Tips for Drivers
- Stay Alert: Whether you’re behind the wheel or walking on the sidewalk, always remain vigilant. Always keep an eye out for pedestrians, especially in busy areas.
- Adapt to Conditions: When driving, exercise extra caution during challenging conditions like nighttime or inclement weather. Reduced visibility can make spotting pedestrians more difficult.
- Respect Crosswalks: Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk, as there may be pedestrians crossing that you can’t see. Always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and give them the right of way.
- Mind Your Speed: Stick to the speed limit, particularly in areas with heavy foot traffic such as school zones or residential neighborhoods. Slowing down gives you more time to react to unexpected situations.
- Give Space: When passing cyclists or pedestrians, leave at least three feet of space to ensure their safety. Be patient and wait for a clear opportunity to pass safely.
Remember, pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you are driving or walking, prioritize caution and respect for others on the road. By following these tips, we can work together to reduce crashes and keep our streets safe for everyone.
