Seat Belts and Speaking Up: Protecting Passengers on Our Roads
Fairfax County, VA – Every crash affects more than just the driver. During National Passenger Safety Week, January 19β26, the Fairfax County Police Department is highlighting the important role passengers play in keeping everyone safe on the road.
Passenger safety is an important part of safe travel that often does not get enough attention. No matter where you are seated, wearing a seat belt and encouraging safe driving choices can make a meaningful difference.

Crashes Impact Everyone in the Vehicle
When a crash occurs, unrestrained passengers are at significantly higher risk of injury and can also cause harm to others in the vehicle. In a sudden stop or collision, an unbuckled passenger can become a projectile, increasing the severity of injuries for themselves and those around them.
Even short trips and low-speed crashes can result in serious consequences. Seat belts remain one of the most effective tools for reducing injuries and saving lives.
Passengers Have Power, Use It
Passengers are not just along for the ride, they play an active role in roadway safety. Speaking up can prevent a crash before it happens.
If you are a passenger:
- Buckle up every time, regardless of where you are sitting
- Speak up if the driver is speeding, distracted, or impaired
- Encourage safe driving choices like putting the phone away and focusing on the road
- Do not ride with someone who has been drinking or using drugs
If you are a driver:
- Make sure every passenger is buckled up before moving the vehicle
- Set expectations for safe behavior, especially with teen passengers
- Be a role model by driving attentively and obeying traffic laws
- Speak up for safety, even if it feels uncomfortable
Talk to Teens About Speaking Up
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to talk with teens about the importance of passenger safety. Young passengers should know they have the right to speak up if they feel unsafe and the confidence to ask a driver to slow down, put the phone away, or stop the vehicle.
These conversations can help teens build lifelong habits that protect themselves and others.
