Snow Much to Consider: Preparing for the Weekend Storm
Fairfax County, VA – Our area is expected to experience a significant winter storm this weekend with a wide range of snow and ice potential across the region. Conditions may change quickly and now is the time to prepare.
Our officers will remain on duty throughout the storm, responding to emergencies and assisting our community. You can help keep yourself, your family, and first responders stay safe by planning ahead and limiting travel when possible.

Avoid Travel Unless It’s Necessary
During winter storms, the safest choice is to stay off the roads whenever possible. Snow, ice, and freezing rain can create dangerous driving conditions, even on treated roadways.
If you must travel:
- Reduce your speed and increase following distance
- Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns
- Be alert for icy spots on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads
- Give snowplows, tow trucks, and emergency vehicles extra space
Clear All Snow and Ice from Your Vehicle
Before driving, take the time to clear your vehicle completely. Snow or ice left on your car can slide onto your windshield or into the path of other drivers.
Be sure to clear:
- Roof
- Windshield and rear window
- Headlights and taillights
- Side mirrors
- License plate
Fully clearing your vehicle improves visibility and helps prevent crashes.
Prepare for Possible Power Outages and Delays
A large winter storm can lead to power outages, road closures, and longer response times.
We recommend having:
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- Fully charged phones and portable chargers
- Warm clothing, blankets, and extra layers
- Bottled water and non-perishable food
- Prescription medications and essential supplies
- Ice scrapers, shovels, salt, and traction material like sand or kitty litter
Ice Can Be Just as Dangerous as Snow
Even light freezing rain or refreezing temperatures can create slick conditions.
Safety reminders:
- Roads and sidewalks may be icy even if they appear clear
- Walk slowly and wear footwear with good traction
- Use handrails when available
- Treat walkways and driveways to reduce slipping hazards
Black ice is most common overnight and during early morning hours.
Check on Elderly Neighbors and Those Who May Need Assistance
Cold weather and power outages can be especially dangerous for older adults and individuals with medical or mobility needs.
Please consider:
- Checking in on elderly neighbors or family members
- Ensuring they have heat, food, and medications
- Offering help with snow removal or essential errands
