Class is in Session: Thanking Our School Resource Officers

Fairfax County, VA – Today, the Fairfax County Police Department recognizes National School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Day, honoring the officers who dedicate themselves to keeping our schools safe while building meaningful connections with students and educators.

Since 1995, School Resource Officers have played a vital role in helping ensure safe learning environments while serving as trusted law enforcement resources for school administrators. Beyond safety, SROs contribute to positive school climates, strengthen relationships between police and the community, and support students and staff throughout the school year.

Officers selected for the SRO program receive specialized training to prepare them for the unique responsibilities of working in school settings. This training includes:

  • Mental health and crisis intervention training in accordance with state standards
  • Disability awareness training
  • Implicit and racial bias awareness training
  • Restorative justice techniques and the Alternative Accountability Program
  • Cultural competency training provided in partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools
  • Active violence response training with SWAT, including scenario-based exercises to strengthen single-officer response and coordination during critical incidents

The Fairfax County Police Department has 51 School Resource Officers assigned to high, secondary, and middle schools across the county. While SROs are sworn law enforcement officers, their role extends beyond enforcement. They serve as mentors and problem-solvers and often take on additional roles within their school communities, including coaches and club advisors. These connections allow officers to build trust, support students beyond the classroom, and have a lasting positive impact on school communities.
